Sony quickly announced its plans to make Venom 2 after the box office success of the first Venom movie. After that though, there was complete darkness on any other details for this next film in the franchise.  It is now known, according to comicbook.com that Andy Serkis will be directing the film. Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams are also slated to be reprising their roles as Eddie Brock and Anne Weying. The real question though is will Woody Harrelson play CletusKasady/Carnage.

With no news in the past year or so about this movie; I was hoping that this would never see the light of day. The first movie was disjointed, poorly acted, and not really memorable.  It felt like an old early 2K’s or late 90s superhero (antihero?) movie and lacked the magic of newer comic book films.  It honestly amazes me that the audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is at 89%.

Don’t get me wrong, I wanted this movie to be great. Venom is one of my favorite Marvel villains and my absolute favorite team-up partner of Spider-man. In fact, as a child, I only purchased Spider-Man comics where the web-slinger teamed up with Venom to take down Carnage. Spider-Man and Venom had their differences but put that aside to take down Carnage, especially since neither one was successful at taking him down on their own.

I was hoping that the original Venom movie would hit some real inner-feels from what I remembered as a kid, but it just left me wishing I never paid to see it. After watching it I even decided I was going to pretend that it didn’t exist.  With Venom 2 getting closer to being made, I might have to accept that this movie, is in fact, for real.

If that is the case, I hope that Andy Serkis and the cast and make this sequel a better film than the first. To do that, they need to get some great writers behind the script. If the story is going to fall flat, acting is terrible, and the characters aren’t relatable then it will end up as terrible as the first.
