Titans season 2 has been out for some time now and I have just now finished it. The series follows the team we know as the Titans as they form a new team made up of new heroes.
The series stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Teagan Croft as Rachel/Raven, Anna Diop as Starfire, Minka Kelly as Dove, and Alan Richston as Hawk, and Connor Leslie as Donna Troy. Curran Walters plays Jason Todd and will be in more episodes for season 2 than in season 1. We also have a couple of guest stars this season. Chelsea Zhang as Rose Wilson, Esai Morales as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, and Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne.
Season 2 starts right where season one left off with Raven and the rest of the Titans facing down Trigon. Trigon is Raven’s dad and he is a demon and wants to destroy the world. He is trying to do this by breaking Raven’s heart. Trigon pulls the group into the dark dimension to do this and is successful. Raven overpowers him and stops him.
Season 2 introduces Slade Wilson and brings up some history for the Titans. We get to see the group start to take form. We are also introduced to Superboy and Krypto from Cadmus Labs. Which is a great story all on its own. Superboy is lost the entire show to who he can be. He is slowly learning his place in the world until he is recaptured and forced to do whatever Cadmus Labs tells him. He comes through in the end, however. This was one of my favorite parts of the season seeing Superboy and the show doing a good story with Connor.
The show goes on to give you more back story on Slade Wilson and why the elder members of the Titans team have something against him. The team has encountered Slade before and people who trusted them died. This made for a great story because the new members had no idea about what had happened previously and the team doesn’t seem to want to discuss it. However it will eventually come out but at a great cost.
Season 2 of Titans added more background for the characters. The show kept backstories in synch from season 1. We got the first Aqualad for a couple of episodes. Unfortunately he met an untimely end at the hands of Slade Wilson even though he wasn’t the main target. That was another thing that had the team overwhelmed. Aqualad died and the team felt like they were the cause. It was something that affected the season 2 storyline the whole way through.
The character development this season pushes the envelope. We see Dick Grayson come to terms with Bruce Wayne and how he was raised. Which in this storyline was a big part of why he left. Grayon gave up being Robin and went to be a detective in Detroit. He was quickly thrown back into the superhero life with Rachel finding him.
Bruce Wayne is another big part of season 2. While the casting of lain Glen may have made Bruce being a little to old to fit the storyline it did cover the fact that he was working with the Justice League. The great part is they talk about the League. Bruce is there to give his wisdom and guide Dick Grayson to becoming the leader and hero he raised him to be. Dick ends up as Nightwing this season. Even though it’s for one episode you see his growth all throughout the season.
I may be leaving quite a bit out with Hawk and Dove. I also didn’t really cover Beast Boy getting captured and used to kill people by Cadmus. The final thing I would like to talk about is the Donna Troy ending. She saves Dove and ends up giving her life. She was electrocuted. The thing is we know Diana can handle lightning so why can’t Donna Troy. She’s supposed to basically have all of her abilities so she should be able to withstand it. Also, why did she save Dove? Where was Connor? I hope these are some questions they answer in season 3.
Titans Season 2 reminds me a lot of Young Justice. Which is a good thing! I hope to see the series develop and move forward to bring in more and more characters. There’s a potential we could get up to 5 seasons of the show so I am hoping it gets to go that far. I hope with season 3 we get to meet Kid Flash and the second Aqualad. Miss Martian would be great. I guess I am hopeful for a lot of things. The series is the best comic book series on television. I cant wait to see where it goes.
Season 2 gets a 4/5 grade. The Donna Troy death is the one thing I hold against the show. Hopefully, during season 3 they go in-depth on that a little more.
