This week the public got their first look at the highly anticipated character played by Brie Larson. Seemingly unable to wait however, Larson tweeted at Entertainment Weekly (EW) a day early with “Hey @EW I’m bored. Wanna break the Internet tomorrow?” (see below) EW replied to Larson, notifying the public on exactly what day/time we can expect this “Internet Breaking” news.
After seeing the newly released images, I knew I needed some time to process. Was there something “extra” in them that during the excitement was missed upon first sight? I’m not a Captain Marvel expert by any means but these pictures ended up being exactly what they said they would be, a first look. I saw nothing really exciting, new or secret. It was kind of a let down.
Even though there aren’t Easter eggs to be found (at least none by me), the new images still give us a look at a younger Nick Fury. Fury is complete, with both eyes still intact. Will we see how he lost his eye in this movie? The work done on Sam Jackson looked beautiful and I’m sure it’ll carry over to screen just as well.
Another picture shows us a younger Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel sporting a Nine Inch Nails shirt (NIN) and S.H.I.E.L.D baseball cap in what looks to be some sort of tech-type room (are those cameras behind her)? Is she in a S.H.I.E.L.D facility? Could she be possibly talking with Coulson? While Coulson isn’t seen anywhere in the images, it’s known that he will appear in this feature as it predates his “death” in the MCU.
The picture that probably contains the most information is the one with Starforce. It shows that Ronan is indeed back and gives us a look at the the Starforce team. Just seeing Starforce is enough to make the entire spread worth a look. It will be interesting at the very least to see where this takes place and what is happening.
The hype didn’t break the internet, and the “First Look” is underwhelming. The costume looks great, but nothing unexpected. If anything, the pictures lead to more questions but ultimately tell us very little about the movie. Maybe others were more excited about it, but I don’t think the anticipation and suspense from yesterday lived up to what was given to the audience today. We will have to wait until we get to see Brie Larson in action on International Women’s Day, March 8th, to get the full picture. In the meantime, thanks for the tweet-bait Larson.
