The Magicians is a weekly episodic show on the Syfy Network and Stars Jason Ralph as Quentin Coldwater, Stella Maeve as Julia, Hale Appleman as Elliot, Arjun Gupta as Penny, and Olivia Taylor Dudley as Alice. I found The Magicians show on Netflix randomly searching one day for something to watch. I had no idea that it was a regularly aired show on Syfy before that and didn’t know it was a book for that matter. I did know however that after the first episode I was hooked.
I watched the first season in a binge-watching fashion and barely left the couch. The fantasy and magic aspect is what kept me interested. The show feels like a more adult version of the Harry Potter movies/books. The first season ended on a high note and I couldn’t wait for the second season. Unfortunately, having Netflix I’d have to wait longer than usual but I could deal with it as long as the story for season 2 was worth it.
Season 2 again was great and brought the characters into the world without the beast. The villain of Fillory that was hellbent on killing the group from Brakebills University. The story followed the journey to stop the gods of Fillory Ember and Umber. However, when they did stop them magic was shut off which set up the lead in to season 3.
Season 3 followed the journey of the group without their magic and led them on an adventure to restore magic which they did, but I wouldn’t 100% call it a success. Fillory had a dark side. Castle black spire. Which is where the group had to go to restore magic. In doing so they released a god and the team’s memories were erased and they were sent back to earth not knowing who they were.
Season 4 led them on an adventure to get Elliot back. He was who the god of black spire chose to possess. The only person that he befriended was Quentin Coldwater. Quentin worked with both Elliot and his friends to try and figure out a way to lock the beast up and get his friend back. In doing so they challenged the librarians which are a group of people who live in another dimension that keep the secrets of everyone’s life for every timeline they have lived. They also keep magical books and things as well. The library wanted to capture and obtain power from Elliot, but it failed. In the process, Elliot was freed and Quentin was killed. This led to a sad ending which is where the show should have ended. Quentin was the main character of the show and the books. Without him, there isn’t a story left to tell.
However, season 5 was announced and premiered in January 2020 and today it was announced that Syfy had decided that season 5 would be the shows last. While I can say that I expected this to be the case it doesn’t soften the blow. While the world has delved into superhero shows and movies this show really went in an opposite direction. It was about heroes, but they used magic and lived in fantasy worlds.
With Jason Ralph leaving, the show was on borrowed time. Usually with shows like these once the main character leaves they only last one maybe two seasons unless they’re the Walking Dead. I am hoping for a Netflix revival so I guess it’s a wait and see.
I hope the shows finale episode ties the story together and doesn’t end with a cliffhanger. Anyways check the show out on Netflix and see what you think. I promise you that you won’t be disappointed.
