Super Mario Brothers, which was released on April 5th, 2023, stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, with Keegan Michael Keyes as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The movie is an adaptation of over 30 years of video games and follows the Mario Brothers as they navigate a different world, team up with characters like Toad, Donkey Kong, and Princess Peach, and face off against Bowser and his Koopa army.
Plot: 100
The Super Mario Brothers’ plot is faithful to the video game franchise, and it takes the viewers on an exciting adventure with the Mario Brothers. The movie’s storyline introduces several pieces of this world that could lead to several different spinoffs, such as Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, and other films that could add to the Mario Brothers’ adventures.
Writing: 100
The movie’s writing is excellent, with characters introduced in a great fashion and a storyline that drives the movie’s adventure. The Mario Brothers’ separation and their efforts to find one another again are compelling, and the movie leaves bits and pieces open for spinoff potential. The writing introduces characters and places that could lead to different movies and adds to the Mario Brothers’ universe.
Characters: 100
The characters in the movie are spot on, just as they were in the games. Mario and Luigi have weaknesses that they must work through, with Mario setting high expectations for himself while Luigi is scared and always worried. Toad and Donkey Kong knew their places and were there to help and move the story forward, while Princess Peach and Bowser were amazing facing off with each other, following their storyline from Mario Odyssey.
Director: 100
The Directors of the film, Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, did an excellent job of making the video game franchise into a good movie for everyone, not just kids. Despite the pandemic, the voice work was done over zoom meetings, and the movie meshed everything together to tell one cohesive story while leaving bits and pieces open for spinoff potential. The film had Easter eggs from the games and several amazing things going on throughout the entire film.
Final Thoughts
The Super Mario Brothers movie turns the game’s storyline into an epic adventure, with Mario and Luigi as the heroes that both worlds deserve. The movie is cohesive, with a story that has closure but also leaves open the potential for a sequel and spinoff films. The supporting cast was perfect, giving the Mario Brothers the assistance they needed, and I would recommend this movie to anyone, with or without kids. This is a movie that has been in the making since 1983, and it’s worth seeing. The final grade is 100, 10/10, all the stars!
