Day 1 of the New York Comic Con is usually considered a slow day. Most people are still at work and/or attending school and thus not at the con. Marvel didn’t care about a lesser attendance*  and broke out a lot of new announcements from its booth (#1354). The company gave insights about video games, new comic series, and more.

The list of announcements is as follows:

  • Star (From Captain Marvel) will get a limited comic series run
  • ADIDAS will be making a new shoe featuring Marvel heroes
  • Books about Ravencroft Institute will hit shelves in January
  • Five comic “One-Shots” giving the FINAL tales of some Marvel heroes
  • Marvel video game – Realm of Champions
  • New Spider-Man PS4 game called Marvel’s Spider-Man: the Black Cat Strikes

While they broke out a bunch of news, this is obviously what appear to be “garbage” news to me. There is nothing here that is “pee your pants” exciting. The best thing on this list is probably the comic one-shots. Reading the “end” of some of our favorite heroes may give some closure on some bad storylines and open up the door to some more and exciting arcs in the future. We will have to wait and see which heroes will be meeting their “end” though.

Another comic series that was announced, albeit, in a limited run is the breakout character Star. If you are unfamiliar with her, she was introduced during the Captain Marvel series. This “limited” series could change if it does well. This is just Marvel dipping their toe in the water to see if she has enough interest to continue her story.

I am not familiar with the Ravencroft Institute books, but they sound somewhat exciting. They take place after Absolute Carnage so it might be interesting to see how the Institute deals with those events. Honestly, though, I will probably forget about these books before they come out in January.

The two video game announcement is great, but the PS4 Spider-Man game that is already out is still good enough and worth going back to replay or finish up. Maybe the Spider-Man Black Cat game should have been DLC for the already excellent game the PS4 has. As for the “Real of Champions”, I have never played any game of this style so there is no excitement here.

Lastly, Marvel and ADIDAS announced a new shoe. Yawn. I guess for shoe buffs and/or collectors this might be great news, but Vans and other shoe companies already have Marvel type shoes for sale. I won’t be purchasing these but more power to you if you like them.

The Marvel announcements were aplenty, but I am sure the “meat and potatoes” of what the company will bring to the table at NYCC is yet to come. Be on the lookout for Marvel to announce more information about the above list in a panel later during the event as well as some new and hopefully better news. Even though these announcements were lackluster, at least Marvel gave fans something. Because of all the announcements and Marvel coming out of the door swinging, I have to give them props for doing more than most other companies did on day one. Hooray Marvel!! Huzzah!
