This year will mark the first time in 20 years that DC and Warner Brothers will not be taking up space in the infamous Hall H at International Comic-Con in San Diego. While they will still be attending the conference, they will not be showcasing any of their upcoming superhero movies. Those of us who were expecting to see previews or content about Wonder Woman 84, Joker, or Suicide Squad 2 will have to wait a bit longer.

Even though Warner Bros will not be showcasing these films, they will have at least one movie to promote. According to Slashfilm.com, IT: Chapter 2 will make an appearance at the con. hopefully showing a scene from the movie or dropping a new trailer at the very least.

But Why No Supers?

There are many theories floating around the internet and I have some of my own. It could be that DC is starting to break away from the bigger cons like SDCC and/or NYCC to start a con of their own. This isn’t so far fetched, as Blizzard has Blizzcon, Disney has D23, and EA has EA Play.  Warner Bros and DC could be making the jump before Marvel beats them to it.

As mentioned Disney has their own con, which takes place in August, called D23. It makes sense that The Disney Company would like to keep all big IP announcements under one roof. This would surely add to more ticket sales for the D23 event and force a lot of con-goers to choose between Comic-Con or D23.  Both are located in California and both cost a pretty penny to attend.

It sounds plausible, but there are still some hints that it probably won’t happen. For example, Warner Bros. and DC announced they would be returning to Hall H next year to showcase their goods. This was reported by heroichollywood.com but Comic-Con 2020 is a long way off and plans can change.

The biggest and probably most reliable reason that is floating around as to why DC and Warner Bros will not be at SDCC is they are not ready to show anything n the works.  However, there are a few reasons why this is just an excuse at best:

  • Wonder Woman 84 has a tentative release date of June 5, 2020, and finished filming around December last year. This movie will be released before the next Comic-Con takes place.
  • Suicide Squad 2 released a small teaser and has a lot of buzz surrounding it and marks James Gunn’s DC Debut as directory and writer.
  • Joker is set to release October 4, 2019 (<– Most compelling reason)

Ultimately, we will need to wait and see what DC decides to do. Maybe the wait means better superhero movie releases in the future. This might be a little too obvious, but Marvel has continuously been the better of the two brands in film over the course of the last decade.
