San Diego Comic-Con has come to a close and kicked the speculation machine into high gear. Marvel, no doubt, stole the show with its panel and their plethora of movie announcements. To be fair, this was an easy win for Marvel as DC only had their TV and streaming service at the event and did not reveal any movie news.
New Phase 4 MCU Titles
Marvel came out strong at Comic-Con and announced that it has at least 5 titles slated for MCU Phase 4. Among them are the following:
- Black Widow – May 1, 2020
- The Eternals – Nov. 6, 2020
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – Feb 12, 2021
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – May 7, 2021
- Thor 4: Love and Thunder – Nov. 5, 2021
New Shows on Disney+
Those weren’t the only big announcements, however, Marvel also stated that their new Disney+ shows will also tie into the MCU. The panel announced the following shows that and their respective releases as well:
- The Falcon and Winter Soldier – Fall, 2020
- WandaVision – Spring, 2021
- Loki – Spring 2021
- What If…? – Summer 2021 (might not be a tie in)
The two overlapping mediums having direct effects on each other makes this Universe even bigger. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, stated that WandaVision will tie directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fans may not need to watch the series to enjoy the movie, but it may help with deeper back story and some easter eggs.
The media giant also confirmed that Loki is dead in the MCU and the Loki series that will air on Disney+ will follow the adventures of the Loki who teleported away with the Tesseract in the 2012 scene from Avengers: ENDGAME. This means it may not be a direct tie in to the current MCU timeline but does exist in the Multiverse.
The best part of all these new shows on Disney+ is that the actors who played the characters in the movies will be returning to reprise their roles. So we again get to see:
- Tom Hiddleston as Loki
- Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier
- Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon
- Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch
- Paul Bettany as Vision
With a list like this, it is no wonder why Marvel won SDCC this year, but they weren’t done yet. Before walking off the stage Kevin Feige also announced that the following were in development, but nothing more:
- Blade starring Mahershala Ali as the titular character
- Guardians of the Galaxy 3
- Captain Marvel 2
- Black Panther 2
- Fantastic Four (hinted)
- X-Men (hinted)
Fans in the panel lost their collective minds at the Blade announcement withTwitter blowing up quickly afterwards. How could Marvel not be top dog this year with all those big announcements? They may not be done either as Disney’s con, D23, is next month and may feature even more news.
DC’s Turn at Comic-Con
Next up was the DC/WB Panel and it was clearly overshadowed by Marvel. That’s not to say DC didn’t come out with some exciting announcements of their own. DC calmed the fears of its DC Universe subscribers by announcing that the service will be around for “some time”. That led into the company announcing the following:
- Titans Season 2 will start airing Sept. 6, 2019
- Doom Patrol Renewed for Season 2 and premier in 2020
- Young Justice Season 4 (TBD)
- New Harley Quinn Animated trailer (TBD)
The panel also revealed a new trailer for the Harley Quinn animated series which is still in the “Coming Soon” phase. The trailer confirmed that strong language would be used in the show and will be as violent and funny as anyone could ask for. Animation is where DC owns Marvel and this is part of the reason why.
The only concerning thing to come out of the panel is that Doom Patrol Season 2 will also be featured on the HBO Max streaming service. They stated that the DC Universe service is safe, but top execs are sure to be looking at which service has better numbers for the show and may merge the two services together. Only time will tell though.
