Detective Pikachu was released May 10th, 2019 and was met with much anticipation by Pokemon fans everywhere. It appears that there were not as many Pokemon fans as there may have been in the 90s and early 2000s as the movie failed to dethrone Avengers: Endgame at the box office.
The movie follows the titular Pokemon Pikachu and his human partner, Tim Goodman. Pikachu is experiencing amnesia and is on a quest to figure out what happened, while Tim is searching for answers about his father’s sudden death. As the two cross paths, they work together to solve the mysteries that surround them.
A simple premise that is easily followed by the attendance it is meant for; The children. Older Pokemon fans may feel the nostalgia factor at first but are quickly let down as the story fails to entertain. The movie has its funny moments, and Ryan Reynolds does a good job at playing Pikachu and bringing the laughs, but that’s it. The movie falls short for adults and the fan who grew up with the original series. Even the hype children feel after the film will most likely be short lived as it’s honestly not that memorable.
Other than the few jokes that land, the only good thing about this movie is the CGI. The Pokemon throughout the movie was done well. They all looked good, from the large Charizard to the lovable Psyduck. When the film starts to fall, it’s better to just check the background for other Pokemon or easter eggs.
In the end, don’t waste your money on this movie and wait for it on iTunes or DVD. If you want to see a good Pokemon movie it’s better to revisit Pokemon 2000 or Pokemon: The First Movie. Either one is better than this live action garbage.
