This movie, See You Yesterday, is a year old and I swear I haven’t seen it on Netflix before.  The movie premiered on Netflix on May 3, 2019. It stars Eden Duncan-Smith as CJ(Claudette Walker) and Dante Crichlow as Sebastian. They are two friends who are working on a science fair project that can supposedly let them time travel.

When the film first starts, you are introduced to these two highschool students who are working on a project outside of a garage. My first impression was this movie is going to be kind of a childish film. Two kids trying to time travel and they’re building these devices for a science fair project; it seemed kinda dull. I was wrong.

The two kids live in New York and are trying to get into college. They’re using this project to try and get scholarships. However with a turn of events, they will have to test their project like never before.

During the course of the film, we meet other characters that the two main protagonists interact with. One of those characters is CJ’s brother Calvin. He is her older and is trying to survive in Brooklyn. He works and hangs out with a guy named Dennis. Who also watches out for CJ. One day CJ and Sebastian are testing out their devices and they actually work, sending them both back in time. They end up witnessing events that they already lived. They only have ten minutes before they have to return, but they realize they had jumped back a day.

Of course, this keeps them testing and testing. As the movie goes on that childish feeling starts to fade away and the viewer gets more of a dramatic feeling. During a July 4th celebration CJs brother is gunned down by police in a case of mistaken identity. Which is relatable to a lot of which is going on in the world today. A store was robbed by two men who took off on foot and ran past Calvin and Dennis into a building. The cops pulled up, and the next thing we know CJ and her family are at Calvin’s funeral.

The two teenagers spend the rest of the movie trying to fix the timeline. I won’t say how or what else happens. I just wanted to make a point that this movie holds a lot of real-life in it outside of the time travel. I really enjoyed the film, it was entertaining and heartbreaking all at the same time.

There’s also a cameo by Michael J. Fox who I think should at least cameo in every movie about time travel. This film reminded me a lot of back to the future 2. Trying to go back and correct your mistakes and still not managing to each time.

The movie ends and I felt like there could have been more. I am hoping that means Netflix will be working on a sequel. But we all know how Netflix is with there TV series and cancellations. Hopefully, they aren’t like that with their movies.

I enjoyed this film for what it was and it relates to a lot of things going on in the world today. You see the culture and the group of people in this film and what they go through with police and the plot of the mistaken identity causing the time travel
You see how they handle it as a community and the protesting in the film is spot on. Again from the description of the film I didn’t want to give it a chance but after the fact I’m glad I did!

I give See You Yesterday a score a 90% and I hope there’s a sequel in the works!
