After a 4 year hiatus, fans finally got some good news from Square Enix, the makers of the beloved Final Fantasy series, regarding the coveted Final Fantasy VII remake. Earlier today Sony released a new trailer for the long-awaited and overdue game at its State of Play event. Albeit, the trailer does say its developmental footage, meaning some things may change. This is still great news since the remake was originally announced back at E3 in 2015 and not much has been heard about it since.
This remake has been met with some issues though and is most likely the reason no new information was announced until now. Square Enix originally hired a 3rd party company to work on the game, CyberConnect2, and then pulled it back to develop it in house. Not only did they pull it back, but Tetsuya Nomura, the director who is working on the title, was in the middle of Kingdom Hearts 3 development and could not give it his full attention. Now that Kingdom Hearts project is over the Final Fantasy VII project looks to be back on track.
Slowly Square Enix has been dropping information leading fans on about some big news to be dropping soon. Before this trailer dropped, Square Enix announced a concert dedicated to the game. The concert is to take place on June 9th, just days before the E3 event begins. Not only is that close to E3’s start date, but it is also only 15 minutes down the street at the Dolby Theater.
With the trailer/gameplay dropping, the concert being announced, and Square Enix taking Sony’s spot at E3, they are on track to release some big news. This could be Square Enix’s year at E3 by simply giving fans more information about the remake and dropping a release date. Bundle some Final Fantasy VII news with some “Avengers” game news and Square Enix could make a huge slam dunk at E3.
