There is a lot of speculation and hype after Disney and LucasFilm dropped the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We are no different and have had many debates over what will happen in the conclusion of the Skywalker films. This is one of our biggest and most likely “out there” theories. That being said, if it is correct, possible spoilers ahead.
The most talked-about part of the new trailer is that it shows Rey in Sith robes wielding a dual lightsaber similar to Darth Maul’s and reminiscent of her staff when she was on Jakku. Could Rey have joined the Dark Side? Yes, yes she could have! It makes sense as Kylo Ren says in The Last Jedi that “When the time comes, you’ll be the one to turn.” Her turning to the dark side may even be a catalyst that puts Kylo Ren on a path to redemption.
Rey making the switch isn’t that unbelievable as Luke had his own fears of training her. Perhaps even more importantly, she also embraces the dark side in The Last Jedi when she went through the hole in the ground during her stint on Ach-to. However, if she becomes dark, balanced must be restored and Kylo Ren would then have to be the one to restore balance to the Force. The alternative is that both of them shatter the balance and we get the gray Jedi instead. While a plausible and good theory, it still doesn’t fit something that was said by Daisy Ridley. She said that the ending would be essentially jaw-dropping.
Let’s define jaw-dropping for a second. For something to be jaw-dropping, something greatly unexpected has to happen. That something could be Kylo Ren \changing over to the Light and Rey going dark. “The Rise of Skywalker” then takes on its meaning by him killing Dark Rey. Kylo Ren then goes back to being Ben Solo and denounces the Jedi all together. No light and dark, no opposing sides,, only gray.
The answer to what that will ultimately end up meaning may be answered in the next set of Star Wars movies (unless they are prequel period pieces). J.J. Abrams is known to leave more questions then he answers and usually has some sort of confusing or “left to viewer interpretation” ending and this movie will, no doubt, have that same effect.
So for you TL;DR fans. Here is the rundown of this theory.
- Rey goes dark
- Kylo Ren restores balance by going to the light
- Ren kills Rey
- All Jedi and Sith balance, etc. are denounced.
