At Star Wars Celebration in Chicago Disney has announced that the planet of Batuu at Galaxy’s Edge will be opening in phases. While this is no huge surprise to Disney nerds; the announcement of an early opening is. Disney let the cat out of the bag and told the packed crowd at the convention that the Disneyland version will be opening on May 31, 2019, and Disney Worlds will follow on August 29, 2019. However, as stated previously, only a portion of the land(s) will be open at that time and the full opening will be later in the year.
The Disneyland version of Galaxy’s Edge will be located north of Frontierland where Big Thunder Ranch was located. The Disney World version will be located in Hollywood Studios expanding where the current Star Wars attraction (Star Tours) is located and is taking over the Streets of America section of the park.
Both lands will pretty much be identical and include the “Millenium Falcon: Smugglers Run” and “Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance” attractions. On the Smugglers Run attraction guests will fill a crucial role as a member of the Falcon’s flight team, similar to Epcot’s Mission Space. The ride will give each crew member an assigned job: Pilot, Engineer, or Gunner. Disney staff assures guests that each job has its perks and each are important and fun.
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has guests flying with Poe Dameron and will meet famous Resistance members along the way including Nien Nunb, BB-8, and Poe Dameron himself. Guests will board Poe’s ship and end up in the clutches of the First Order and taken in by their tractor beam. The experience continues as guests will be taken aboard a Star Destroyer and interrogated by the First Order.
Other than the two rides, Star Wars: Galaxy’s edge will have its own Cantina with Star Wars themed beverages. At Oga’s Cantina guests can enjoy blue milk as well as other non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. Coca Cola has also confirmed it will manufacture custom bottles for its beverages for the land. Guests in Disneyland will need to stay in the cantina to enjoy their food and beverages. For the opening day menu, click here.
While these are a few of the attractions announced, there is bound to be more in store. Disney has previously stated that there will be “walk” around characters. These characters will interact with guests and most will not be from the films but are locals to the planet or visitors from other places around the Galaxy. This will be similar to how the “Citizens of Hollywood” roam the park in Disney World.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be exciting for Star Wars fans and even those who do not care for any of the Star Wars movies. Disney designed the lands with everyone in mind so that all could enjoy it. If you are looking to go to Disney World or Disneyland for the opening of Batuu, the name of the planet all this takes place on, then I would start booking and planning now as the opening weekend is already sold out at both locations. For more information on booking visit Dreams Unlimited Travel or your favorite Disney travel agent. You can bet I already started my planning for a 2021 trip.
UPDATE:
- Disneyland will require reservations for Galaxy’s Edge. It is not known if Disney World will operate the same way as of 4-18-2019.
