The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is a real thing. According to polygon, the movie appears to be about 2 police officers who help Sonic on a journey to stop Dr. Robotnik and saving some kidnapped kids. Sonic is not new to the movie scene as he had some animated made for TV movies/specials during the 90s. He had his own OVA and Christmas special in 1996. Sonic also had a few different animated television series as well with the first starting in 1993. The list of Sonic’s animated series are as follows:
- The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993)
- Sonic the Hedgehog (1993-1994)
- Sonic Underground (1999)
- Sonic X (2003-2006)
- Sonic Boom (2014-2017)
The new movie takes its name and its loosely based plot from the Sonic the Hedgehog video games made popular in the early 90s by Sega. The game followed Sonic and his woodland(?) friends on their adventures to stop Dr. Robotnik. In the video game, Dr. Robotnik’s main goal is to capture animals and turn them into robots for his nefarious plans. At the end of each set of stages, Sonic encounters Dr. Robotnik in a different vehicle or form during a boss battle.
The video game series rivaled Nintendo’s Mario Brothers series during its time and helped start the first ever console war. Speaking of Mario Brothers, they had their own movie in the early 90s and fans of both series are hoping that the new Sonic movie is leagues better than its Mario predecessor.
