Batgirl #31
Old Enemies (Part 2)
Barbara is hard at work volunteering for Alejo when she has a small spat with Jason Bard. The two make a small unwilling truce as Alejo tells them both they are good at their jobs and not to make her choose between them. As Alejo gets ready to speak in public, Barbara turns on Batgirl mode and “disappears” from her volunteer duties. She spots Cormorant in a window and springs to action getting her face beat in a bit. She fends off Cormorant and is able to get a sample of his blood before he leaves. Barbara analyzes the blood and pins Cormorant down to Edward Wells.
She tracks him to Alejo’s rival, where she sees Cormorant beating the hell out of him too. Batgirl again fends off Cormorant and before departing tells them he will kill them next time. As the issue closes, Alejo is getting ready to speak publicly again and tells Bard to make sure he is safe, and we see Bard and Cormorant (who is in disguise) share an elevator.
This issue was pretty action-packed. I am not familiar with Cormorant, and don’t know if this villain has been around for a while, but I like the mercenary style. What also interests me is that this is now a Blackgate investigation and not just a political tit-for-tat.
Man Without Fear #5
Matt is starting to walk again at the beginning of this issue. He is using handrails to help him, but he is getting there. He realizes that pain is what drives him as his father said and he acknowledges that. He also comes face to face with fear again and acknowledges that it will always be a part of him no matter where he goes, but he now realizes it is people like him, like DareDevil that inflict fear on people like Wilson Fisk. That fear is what is going to keep him going, as he will not let “them” (the villains) take his city.
This was a great issue. This sets up for the new DareDevil run perfectly. Matt now has a new emotion to deal with going forward and is going to use it to help him and his cause. If you haven’t ready any DareDevil yet, start with the next issue #1 coming next week. It looks like it is going to be a great new run on the Devil of Hells Kitchen.
Detective Comics #997
Waiting for a Miracle
We start with Thaddeus and Batman tied up and practically being drowned. Sharks ensue and Batman is able to rip open some sharks with his gloves. He takes the meat and surrounds his bindings and Viola! escape artist batman gets out by piranhas eating the leather strap the shark meat is in. Batman and Thaddeus get out and quick fight ensues between batman and a dead Martha and Thomas Wayne and some other figments of Batman’s imagination. After Batman, gets out he leaves Thaddeus and comes face-to-face with Hugo Strange.
The comic was ok, I am not liking the MYTHOLOGY or whatever and can’t wait for it to be over. With the countdown to #1000 coming out I don’t see this lasting much longer.
Teen Titans Annual #1
Part 1
Damian hunts down Jason Todd in Texas and confronts him about leaking information that almost got the team blown up. They two battle it out with Red Hood besting Robin and telling him he had nothing to do with them being setup and almost killed.
Part 2
Joystick takes over Djinn’s brain and controls her while she fights her friends. While Joystick is in control he tells the Teen Titans that Djinn thinks Kid Flash and Red Arrow are the two strongest. He also spills the beans that she (Djinn) is in love with Robin. Crush gets upset by something that Djinn was forced to say and smashes one of Damian’s vehicles.
Epilogue
Djinn confronts Joystick in prison and takes away his mouth threatening that if he ever spills any of her secrets she will remove other pieces of him.
For being an annual, Teen Titans was pretty good. I like the Robin v Robin in part 1 and Part 2 looked like it was going to be gimmicky but turned out to be a pretty fun read especially learning how dark Djinn’s past is.
