A new trailer for the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII remake has recently dropped. Like it’s predecessor teaser/trailer, it shows only footage from the town/area known as Midgar. Since the game will be in an episodic-like format the first release will only take place in the early Midgar section.

If the trailer is a real representation of what fans can expect on the actual gameplay, then the wait is arguably worth it.  The trailer shows some changes to gameplay, specifically, to the battle system. It appears to have a more real-time hack and slash feel similar to the Kingdom Hearts style of battle. Hopefully, the battle system is more like Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 vs Kingdom Hearts 3.  We do not need so “specials” during fights.

The dialogue is a welcome addition as well and is what will make the game a huge success if done well. This will make it easier to understand the complex storyline of Final Fantasy VII. The original game had so many characters and side stories that the inclusion of voice acting will help make the game be more like an interactive movie. This will help players better understand and follow each storyline a lot closer and pick up small things and jokes that may have been missed during the reading-based dialogue in the original version of the game. With voice acting, we will also get to better understand the mood of the characters as the tone is not as easily garnered when reading dialogue as well, and the polygonial character sprites didn’t exactly help with facial expressions to convey their mood either.

In short, the game looks amazing and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The only issue I have now is which version to buy. The 1st Class Edition is $329 and includes:

  • FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE game
  • Play Arts Kai Cloud Strife & Hardy Daytona
  • Artbook
  • Mini-Soundtrack
  • Steelbook
  • Cactuar Summon Materia DLC
  • Carbuncle Summon Materia DLC

While the Play Arts figure and Carbuncle Summon Materia are cool, the Deluxe Edition is only $79 and includes everything but the two aforementioned items. For those that think $80 is a bit too much, the standard edition (which only includes the game) is at the standard $60 price tag.

If the 1st Class Edition is going to be available for subsequent “episodes” of the game, then I have no doubt the total price tag for the entire series will run over $1,000. I just don’t know if I can drop that coin in the long run. Either way, I will be deciding shortly on which version to get and preorder it within the next week or two.

In the end, the trailer shows that Square Enix is not rushing out a port of the game and is working tirelessly to bring fans of the series everything they want. The expectations are high for this remake and Square seems to be deliviering on all fronts without half-assing any of it. The release date of March 20, 2020, can not come soon enough!
