Teen Titans #24
And They All Fell Down
After the explosion in the last issue, the Teen Titans are stuck under debris. Robin seeks out Djinn to transport them all out of there, but she refuses for reasons that aren’t given. Crush is currently holding up the rest of the building to protect the team from getting crushed and is getting weaker and weaker as the banter between the Titans continue. After some time, Crush tells Robin that he got them into this mess and he needs to figure a way to get them out. He ponders for a few moments, sets some explosives, and has red arrow blow them up so they all fall to the sewer.
Once back at Titan tower there is some funny moments with Crush telling Roundhouse he still stinks after a shower and to wash again. Red Arrow visits Djinn’s room to confront her on why she wouldn’t help the team. Djinn doesn’t appreciate the threatening tone and chokes her out, only for her (Red Arrow) to wake up in bed not knowing if it was a dream or not.
This was a great read. For the most part, it shows how the team came together and shows that Djinn has some secrets she’s not ready to share. Red Arrow takes the prize here for the best character in the comic and is quickly becoming my favorite Titan in this iteration of the Teen Titans. I hope the comic stays on track to find out who caused the explosion to bury them in the first place, rather than side-track to some background of Djinn.
Nightwing #53
Knight Terrors (Part 4)
Alphonse Sapienza has embraced Nightwing and is on a mission to hunt down the gang called the Niners that have taken Ric Grayson’s buddy, Burl, hostage. Ric and the new “Nightwing” come in contact at the very start and Ric is glad someone else has taken the weight of Nightwing off his shoulders. Alphonse as Nightwing, cuffs Ric to the cab and hauls ass to find Burl. Ric easily escapes the cuffs and meets up with Nightwing (Alphonse) as he crashes through a skylight and into the hands of the Niners gang with Burl tied to a chair. Ric frees Burl and Nightwing is victorious by luck. Ric gets Burl to the hospital who is ok, and Alphonse ends up at his friends house beat up pretty bad.
Ric goes to his local bar, chats up the bartender, and gives Tiny, another patron, some good advice. Tiny attends an AA meeting feeling depressed he recently relapsed and comes in contact with the Scarecrow to end the comic.
It’s finally great to see a decent villain in Nightwing after so long. With Scarecrow coming into the story, I am hoping we get the old Dick back. Maybe the fear toxin from Scarecrow will fix the amnesia in Dick’s brain. Here is to hoping anyhow.
Batman #59
The Tyrant Wing (Part 2)
Batman infiltrates the facility where Bane is being held, only to be met with hostility from the guards. In typical Batman fashion, he threatens them to try to and take him down and they just let him pass. The book then goes back to the past and we see Batman talking to the Penguin about Bane and how is orchestrating everything that has happened from behind the walls or Arkham.
Batman confronts Bane who appears to be scared of him and cowers at the sight of Batman. Batman proceeds to pummel on Bane until Gordon interrupts. After the four women being killed (see earlier comics) and Nightwing (his boy) being shot, Batman is flying off the rails and punches Gordon for trying to stop him. Gordon believes that Bane is legit brain damaged and doesn’t believe Batman when he (Batman) tells him it’s all an act. After the punch, Gordon tells Batman to leave and if he doesn’t will get the entire GCPD on him. This punch appears to cripple the relationship between Batman and Gordon. After Batman leaves, we are left seeing Bane smile resting in bed.
It’s nice to see Batman pissed off after everything that happened to Nightwing and the earlier murders to the point that he strikes Gordon. It’s going to be interesting to see how this affects the Gordon/Batman relationship. The bad though, it feels like it took too long to get to this plot point. After the KGBeast confrontation, it felt like Batman forgot all about the Nightwing shooting until now, causing the reader to forget what happened to him unless they read the Nightwing comics as well.
Weed Magic #1
Published by Bliss on Tap Publishing
The comic starts with a down and out actor/director named Bunny trying to promote himself and his movie about a space pirate and even encourages people to download it illegally. After not selling any photos of himself in character, he meets up with his friend, Moe, who works at a law office to get himself through Law School. The two make plans to celebrate 420 (the 420 of 420s) by getting some good weed and smoking up. By the time they meet up to buy the weed, it is all sold out.
After leaving the Bake-ry, they run into My$tic who gives them a “special” bag of weed that gives them super-hero type abilities. After smoking half a bag and testing out what the weed can do, they decide to use the rest for good and end up freeing test/lab animals and disappear before the cops can catch them.
I have not heard of Weed Magic until 8bitbros show host Wren handed me issues #1 and #2. I was surprised at how funny and well written the comic is. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and actually found myself actually laughing. Since this is only the first issue, I plan to continue reading to see where it goes.
Weed Magic #2
This issue starts with the boys forgetting about a date with two girls they met in the first issue. They all start smoking up on the couch and forget the bong water still had magic herb left in it. After getting high they end up in biblical times meeting such famous people as Jesus, or um, Van Halen as they call him. The comic touches on biblical stories most people are familiar with and give its own humorous touch. Moe and Bunny find Mystic and he tells them that to get back home, they must find the magic herb and plant the seeds. To do so they break into a pyramid, and steal the seeds. The pyramid starts to crumble and collapse. Bunny and Moe (and their dates) get saved by Van Halen himself. The group plants the seeds and finally make it home completing what they needed to do.
This issue was just as good as the first if not better. I like that My$tic gives a recap of the last issue, this is something I wish more comics would do since it’s hard to keep stories straight after waiting weeks for the next issue. I also love the humor on biblical history this story presents. It shows the classic last supper, the commandments, and Jesus as a terrible carpenter. While the story didn’t follow right on the heels of the first issue, it was very entertaining and again caused some chuckles.
