After some breaking news at New York Comic-Con about the DC Timeline, it looks like a DC Comics Reboot may be in the works. As part of a new “5g” initiative according to Bleeding Cool, the comic book giant is going to retire a long list of its main characters including but not limited to Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The retired elite will then be replaced by younger characters to play take over their roles.

This will be the 5th generation (that’s what the 5g stands for) of DC Comics. The first 4 generations are as follows:

  • Gen 1 – Wonder Woman and continuing through the Golden Age
  • Gen 2 – Superman and the Silver Age (gen 2)
  • Gen 3 – Crisis on Infinite Earths through Flashpoint
  • Gen 4 –  The New 52 up until now

This new take on the heroes will most likely follow a catastrophic universe-wide event. Details of the event and how it impacts the DC Universe are currently scarce but may answer the question of how our current line of heroes stayed young for so long. Even more scarce is who will be taking up the mantle of our favorite heroes and exactly which ones will die, retire, or just plain give up.

One of the rumors from Bleeding Cool (Bleeding Cool has also been hinting at this 5g initiative for a while) suggests that Luke Fox will be the new Batman. It is unknown why Nightwing or one of the robins wouldn’t be the first choice. With Dick Grayson a.k.a Ric Grayson a.k.a Nightwing having an identity crisis at the moment, it would seem fitting that he finds himself as the new Batman. Especially with his newest arc coming up with the Court of Owls.

Some others rumored to be moving on are Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Arrow. It would make sense that one of the Superboys (Jon or Konner Kent) would take over for Superman and Donna Troy or Cassie Sandsmark for Wonder Woman. As mentioned earlier though the obvious choice may not be the correct one. Time will tell who will take up these iconic roles.

Keep in mind that nothing is confirmed yet, but DC loves to reboot their franchises and this may just be another attempt to fix whatever it is they see that’s broken. It has been done before and not just by DC, but does it really work? Will the new Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc be able to live up to their predecessors?

What are your thoughts? Do you think this will even happen? If so, Will this 5g initiative be accepted by comic book fans? Who do you think should be the new iconic heroes? Let us know over on Facebook or Twitter. For more articles about comic books, video games, and technology click here.
