Sorry for the late entries on these titles, but things happen and I wasn’t able to get to them until now. So read on and catch up in this weeks Quick Comic Review!

Black Widow #1

Nat and Cap team up to take out a fake Captain America who has goons and robots ready to blow up Times Square on New Year’s Eve.  Black Widow and the real Captain America stop the explosion and end the fake Captain America’s plans.  In doing so though, Nat looks to have killed(?) the fake cap.  This makes Steve give her a lecture on why they don’t kill.  After it’s over she reminds Steve that it was him who killed her.

The story then flashes back to what Black Widow was doing while she was presumed dead.  She was in Madripoor, an island of criminals.  She ends up befriending the only person who resembles some sort of law, Tyger Tiger. In teaming with her, Nat is requested to seek out who is responsible for “No Restraints Play”.  No Restraints Play is a website that allows the highest bidder to direct what happens to the children and watch it live. After watching the video, Black Widow is ready to take the mission and let her monster out.

This issue was a great start to the new Black Widow series.  The language and dialog is believable from these characters and it has more of an adult theme which I like.  Seeing Black Widow go after a gang/group/etc. that is responsible for kidnapped children who are being tortured/raped/killed/etc. on the internet is definitely a dark and more adult story.  Can’t wait to see how this plays out.

Detective Comics #996

Damian has arrived to help mend Alfred’s punctured lung. Bruce and Damian come to an agreement they need to talk, but Bats must go find out who hurt Alfred and asks Damian to keep watch over the butler while he does.  Damian agrees and off goes Batman.  His first lead is Ducard who’s last known where-a-bouts is in France.  Bruce tracks him down and the two are quickly attacked by some protoplasm monster that takes the form of different Batman villains. After the brief battle, Bruce concludes that Ducard is not responsible and heads to see an old Sensei of his.  There he learns that the same monster attacked and killed everyone at the Dojo except for the Sensei and 1 student.  After talking with Sensei Bruce vows to come back and sets off for New Mexico where he meets up with Thaddeus and has walked into a trap.

Bruce is not in a good mood and wants to know who hurt Alfred. The pissed off Batman is always a good read.  This issue felt short, not sure if I read through too quick or if it was just that good.

Fantastic Four #6
Herald of Doom (Part 1)

Ben and the gang are off to Latvia to stop whatever it is Dr. Doom is up to.  Galactus is apparently attacking Latvia and Dr. Doom is trying to stop him, acting somewhat as a hero.  The Fantastic 4 show up and are greeted by Doom’s new protege Victorius.  Victorius was a woman who helped Dr. Doom come back (see issue #1) and in turn, he gave her superhero type abilities.  These abilities though led Galactus back to Earth.  At the end of the comic, we learned that this is exactly what Dr. Doom had planned.

The Fantastic Four comics are ok.  This one again is just alright.

Man Without Fear #3

Matt is trying to walk again after being in the hospital.  He is using the Defenders to help him with this therapy and each of them try to convince Matt to continue being Daredevil, with the exception of Luke Cage. Luke says that Matt retiring from Daredevil may not be a bad thing, but Jess and Danny don’t want to see him give up and let him know as much.  This issue also flashes back to the Defenders taking down Foolskiller and how Matt had no fear.

Again, its great to see the list of people showing up and helping Matt, and to see his progress from his accident and so far it’s not a bad story.  I can’t wait to see what actually brings him back to become Daredevil again.

TITANS#33
Into the Bleed (Part 1)

The Titans are back on Unearth and starting to make their way to the stronghold as that is where they believe Raven’s Soul-Self is.  As they make their way they encounter different monsters that attack them and the Titans successfully get them to retreat.  At the end of the story, a mask falls off one of the beings trying to attack them and is revealed to be a doppelganger of Raven.

They make a joke about this feeling like D&D and it does.  Ben is giving the team directions on what to do as they progress through Unearth as it has been written about in a book.  So it does totally feel like Ben is the DM and giving instructions to the Titans as if they are players.  Pretty entertaining but the Unearth aspect isn’t really exciting.  Hopefully after Issue #36 we get a reboot with Nightwing back at the helm with a classic lineup of Titans and better stories.
